Karhan apologises for 'one-fingered salute'

Wolfsburg midfielder Miroslav Karhan has publicly apologised to Wolves fans for his 'one-fingered salute' after the InterToto Cup defeat at Thun.

The Slovakia international star reacted after travelling fans began making critical chants when watching the Bundesliga outfit go down 4-1 to the Swiss side.

"It was a stupid thing to do. My reaction was completely out of order," Karhan said on Monday.

"I am very sorry.

"The fans underwent an extremely long journey to come and see us play and were rewarded with a very bad game from us."

Wolfsburg boss Erik Gerets revealed that the club had fined the 28-year-old heavily for his gesture and said the money would be used to sponsor future fan projects.

"I'm pleased that Miroslav has apologised," said Gerets.

"He knows he was stupid, but that must be the end of the matter now."
