Hierro close to Bolton deal
The 36-year-old has been looking to move back into European football after spending a season in Qatar following his release from Real Madrid.
Hierro has been training with Bolton over the past few weeks and he has impressed manager Sam Allardyce - who is now set to hand the Spaniard a 12-month deal.
"I've had talks with Hierro and his representatives over the weekend and he is keen to come to Bolton," confirmed Allardyce.
"I am confident that a deal can be done during the early part of this week.
"He has a massive pedigree and I believe, despite him not playing top football in the last year, that he will be a great asset to Bolton Wanderers.
"His experience and ability will add much needed strength to our defensive line."
Bolton are also continuing talks with Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim.
The 22-year-old defender is available on a free transfer but his former club Maccabi Tel Aviv would be eligible for a compensation payment.
Bolton have now been in touch with Maccabi to try and broker a deal.
""I can confirm a fax has arrived from Bolton, but nothing has been agreed yet," said Maccabi spokeswoman Tali Leibowitz.
