Overmars to quit

Reports in Holland are suggesting that Marc Overmars has surprisingly decided to quit the professional game altogether.

The winger was released by Barcelona this summer but had been linked with moves to several clubs, including Brescia, Internazionale, Fenerbahce and, most recently, Newcastle United.

However, the 31-year-old has been pondering his future due to knee problems that have been dogging him for some time.

After representing his country in Euro 2004, Overmars can look back on a distinguished career.

He started out with Go Ahead Eagles before representing Willem II, Ajax, Arsenal and Barca.

In 86 appearances for Holland, he netted 17 goals, and always displayed dash and invention down the flanks.

The Dutch wide man famously scored the winning goal at Old Trafford against Manchester United in 1998 that set The Gunners up for a Premiership title triumph.

An official announcement has yet to be made but the indications are that Overmars is hanging up his boots.
