Pana: Basinas not for sale

Panathinaikos have stated that Portsmouth target Angelos Basinas is not for sale.

Panathinaikos president Argyris Mitsou has stated that Portsmouth transfer target Angelos Basinas is not for sale.

The Greek Euro 2004 winner attracted fresh interest from Pompey boss Harry Redknapp after impressing for the Athens-based outfit in a pre-season friendly against the South Coast club last weekend.

Prior to seeing Basinas first hand, Redknapp had cooled his interest in the midfielder after turning his attentions elsewhere to boost his midfield this summer, but he now seems keen to add Basinas to his small squad for the new Premiership campaign.

However, a move for Basinas may now prove a challenge for Pompey after Mitsou stated the player is going nowhere.

With the transfer window in Greek football closing at the end of July, Mitsou stated that Portsmouth's latest bid had been turned down and that Basinas's future lies with them.

"This is our final decision. Angelos Basinas isn't for sale," Mitsou said.

"Despite the new offer from Portsmouth, we took the decision to keep the player with us.

"We consider his presence essential for the team. Angelos will help us once again to maintain our titles in Greece and to have a good presence in the (UEFA) Champions League."

Former Tottenham Hotspur man Darren Anderton is another player to be linked with a move to Portsmouth while chairman Milan Mandaric claims Blackburn Rovers striker Dwight Yorke wants to join the South Coast club.

The Trinidad & Tobago hit-man has been the subject of a summer move following a bust-up with manager Graeme Souness.

Bolton Wanderers have also been linked with the former Aston Villa and Manchester United player, but fresh indications suggest Yorke is back in favour with Souness after some fine performances in Rovers' pre-season friendlies recently.

However, Mandaric states the Caribbean star, 32, wants to move on from the Lancashire club and join Pompey.

"Dwight wants to join us - he has told Blackburn that," Mandaric said.
