Hirschfeld handed Terrors deal
Dundee United have handed a deal to Canadian goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld.
Dundee United have handed a short-term contract to Canadian international goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld. The 25-year-old has been looking for a new club after being released by English Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season, having failed to make a single first team appearance in his two years at White Hart Lane.
The former Calgary Storm custodian had loan spells at Luton Town and Gillingham before heading north to Scotland this month for a trial with Ian McCall's side.
The Terrors boss is keen to add some goalkeeping cover after losing Paul Gallacher to Premiership new boys Norwich City this summer.
McCall plans to offer Hirschfeld a five-month deal - with a view to making it a long-term contract.
"We have been in contact with Lars's agent with a view to an initial contract of maybe five months and we can look at things further at the end of it," said McCall.
"But my hunch is that he will be here for much longer than that - he really looks the part."
Should Hirschfeld commit his immediate future to the Tannadice Park club, it will give the keeper the chance to get back into Frank Yallop's Canada squad.
The Edmonton, Alberta native was left out of the 18-man party for next Wednesday's Concacaf zone World Cup qualifier against Guatemala in Vancouver.
