Lippi goes back to basics

Italy coach Marcello Lippi will go back to an orthodox 4-4-2 formation.

Italy coach Marcello Lippi will go back to an orthodox 4-4-2 formation in order to get back to winning ways.

Lippi's tenure in charge of The Azzurri has started badly with defeat in his first match in charge against Iceland.

However, the former Juventus tactician believes that his desire to use a difficult formation confused his players and will go back to a more traditional system.

"In Iceland we played badly," conceded Lippi - whose side now face Norway and Moldova in World Cup qualifiers.

"We lost the match but I made a bad mistake in trying to line up in a Christmas tree formation, which is difficult to explain and learn.

"I think for these games we will revert back to 4-4-2."

Lippi has also had to face Christian Panucci's claims that he has been left out of the national squad because of personal reasons.

"Panucci isn't here exclusively for technical reasons," said Lippi.
