McAteer calls time on Ireland

Jason McAteer has retired from international duty with Republic of Ireland.

Jason McAteer has retired from international duty with Republic of Ireland due to injury and to allow youngsters the chance to feature.

The 33-year-old, who earned 52 caps for his country, has stated the decision to hang up his international boots was one of his toughest ever.

McAteer's highlight for Ireland arrived in September 2001 when his strike sunk Holland 1-0 and put Mick McCarthy's side in pole position to qualify for the 2002 World Cup.

"To retire from competing for your country is probably the toughest decision for any sportsman," confirmed McAteer.

"I have always been immensely proud to represent Ireland and have always given one hundred percent.

"However, I am 33 years old and have suffered with a couple of injuries in recent years which has affected me both mentally and physically, so I feel the time is right to step aside and let the talented youngster have a go."
