Gills sack first team coach

Gillingham have sacked first team coach Wayne Jones on Monday.

Gillingham have sacked first team coach Wayne Jones after a poor recent run of results.

The Priestfield Stadium club have worryingly slid down the Championship table after a run of one draw and five defeats in their last six matches.

The run looks to have cost player-manager Andy Hessenthaler's number two his job, as Gills chairman Paul Scally looks to restructure his club's backroom staff.

It brings to an end a nine-year association between Jones and Gillingham after he initially joined the Kent-based outfit as the club's physio in 1995 before becoming first team coach in the 2000/01 season.

Jones was out of contract at The Priestfield, but Scally insists the decision to let his number two go was not easy.

"It was an extremely hard decision, as Wayne's a lovely man," Scally told BBC Radio Kent. "And we wish him every success in the future.

"But clearly changes needed to be made and I intend to make a number of changes in the next week or so."

Some better news for Gillingham is that the ankle injury sustained by left back John Hills was only a sprain and not a fracture.

The former Blackpool player needed to be stretchered off during Saturday's defeat at Plymouth Argyle with the injury.
