Palace sign Greek star

Crystal Palace have snapped up Greece international Vassilis Lakis.

Crystal Palace have snapped up Greece international Vassilis Lakis on a one-year deal.

The free-agent is allowed to join clubs outside of the transfer window because he does not hold a contract, and Palace boss Ian Dowie has moved to strengthen their squad.

"We are delighted to sign a player of Vassilis' quality," Dowie told the club's official website.

"Subject to international clearance he will go straight into the squad for Monday night's game against Fulham."

Lakis played in Greece's victorious Euro 2004 campaign, although he did not start in the tournament, and will be hoping to make an impact in The Premiership.

The pacey winger left AEK Athens in the summer, after becoming a firm favourite with the club's fans because of his eye for goal.

Lakis scored nine times last year for AEK, adding to an impressive tally of 12 from the season before, and Dowie will be hoping he can repeat this feat in England.
