Weller seals Dale switch

Rochdale have signed Paul Weller, while Kevin Townson is loaned out

Rochdale have signed former Burnley midfielder Paul Weller and have loaned striker Kevin Townson to Scarborough for one month.

29-year-old Weller has signed non-contract terms with the club and goes straight into the squad that travels to Rushden & Diamonds this week.

Weller - recently recovered from a calf injury - has been training with Rochdale for two months.

He left Turf Moor earlier in the summer, and had been training with a number of clubs, including York City.

Meanwhile 21-year-old Townson has joined Conference side Scarborough on a month's loan, in an attempt to gain more first team action.

Dale boss Steve Parkin said: "It's a good move for Kevin with the lack of reserve games and opportunity for the first team. I hope he goes to Scarborough and regains his appetite for scoring goals and comes back all the better for having played."

Townson, speaking after his first training session for The Seadogs, said: "I need the chance to play games and that's what's on offer for me here. It's a good move for me in that sense and I hope I can do myself justice.

"I wasn't playing or even figuring in Steve Parkin's plans and I want to play football. Whether it's for Rochdale or Scarborough doesn't matter at the minute because I don't want to sit in the stand."
