Jeffers' England target

Charlton striker Francis Jeffers aims to force his way back in to the England squad.

Charlton Athletic striker Francis Jeffers is hopeful he can force his way back in to the England squad.

Jeffers has collected just one cap for England, and crowned his debut with a goal against Australia in February 2003.

At that stage, Jeffers was struggling to break in to the Arsenal team and his career is still waiting to take off.

He spent last season on loan at his first club Everton but struggled to recapture his best form back at Goodison Park.

During the summer, Jeffers swapped one London club for another as he joined Charlton from Arsenal but he has yet to set The Valley alight.

His burning ambition, though, is to return to the England fold, with that desire strengthened during the international breaks.

The 23-year-old accepts he needs to start scoring goals on a regular basis before he forces his way back in to Sven Goran Eriksson's plans again.

"I'm disappointed when I'm back here," Jeffers told The Guardian.

"Little things like that debut against Australia and that goal keep me going.

"Maybe if Sven hadn't given me that half a game and I hadn't scored, I would have thought England was in the past.

"Looking at the strikers coming through, it's going to be difficult but I want to be there.

"Until I start doing it for Charlton, though, I don't think Sven can even consider me."
