Juventus moved five points clear at the head of Seria A after seeing off nearest rivals Messina 2-1 at Stadio delle Alpi.

Uruguayan hit-man Marcelo Zalayeta - starting in place of the injured David Trezeguet - opened the scoring shortly before the half hour mark.

Pavel Nedved grabbed a second ten minutes after the interval, and although Riccardo Zampagna pulled one back on 69 minutes the hosts held on for victory.

Roma moved into the top half of Serie A after beating basement boys Livorno 2-0.

The capital club chalked up their first win under new coach Luigi Delneri courtesy of goals in either half from Francesco Totti and Vincenzo Montella.

Inspirational skipper Totti settled Roma's nerves by opening the scoring on the half hour mark.

Montella added a second 20 minutes from time to leave the hosts still looking for their first win of the season.
