Royals reign in Crewe game

Reading picked up a convincing 4-0 win against Crewe.

Reading kept up the pressure on leaders Wigan with a convincing 4-0 win against Crewe at the Madejski Stadium.

The Royals are beginning to look like candidates for promotion this season and proved their quality with a fine victory.

First-half goals from Steve Sidwell, Dave Kitson and Lloyd Owusu put the victory beyond doubt and Invar Ingimarsson put a gloss on the scoreline just after the break.

Owusu had already seen two headers go close when Sidwell lashed home a fine drive from the edge of the box.

Just four minutes later Kitson grabbed his eighth of the season when he rode a challenge and slotted home with aplomb to the delight of the home fans.

Marcus Hahnemann had to be alert at the other end when Steve Jones tried his luck from range, but Kitson missed a glorious chance to double his tally when he headed over from Nicky Shorey's cross.

Owusu made it three on the stroke of half time, latching onto a fine Andy Hughes cross to head powerfully home.

The scoring was wrapped up early in the second half when Glen Little's free-kick was headed in by Ingimarsson.

Crewe tried to get some consolation in the closing stages but it was Reading who came closest to adding to the score when Dean Morgan missed a good chance from six yards.
