Magpies sack Mills

Notts County have sacked manager Gary Mills.

Notts County have sacked manager Gary Mills after less than 10 months in charge of the League Two club.

The Meadow Lane outfit decided to make the move after seeing The Magpies fall to 21st in the table.

Mills only managed three victories in their last 10 League contests and those results have prompted the board to relieve the former Coventry City first team coach and offer him another role at the club.

Mills replaced Billy Dearden back in January and quickly moved to reshape the squad - even though The Magpies were relegated from the old Division Two at the end of the campaign.

Expectations for a better season in the newly-named League Two were anticipated by the East Midlands side, but their poor start has seen them slip to near the foot of the table.

With Mills's exit, the club have appointed long-time servant Ian Richardson as caretaker player-manager, with academy manager John Gaunt being named his assistant.

Richardson will take charge when Notts County face fellow League Two strugglers Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

Despite the club's announcement, Mills's former assistant Darron Gee has claimed that he is still in his role with The Magpies.

"I can only tell you Gary's been relieved of his first team duties and is considering whether to accept the offer of another role at the club, but I am still the assistant manager," Gee said.
