Merson worried

Paul Merson is dreading the sack after Walsall's shock defeat in the first round of the FA Cup.

Walsall were humbled 2-1 by non-league Slough on Saturday and the surprise loss has left Merson fearing for his future.

The former England international took over the reins at The Bescot Stadium in April, initially on a temporary basis from Colin Lee.

Though The Saddlers were relegated, Merson was appointed player-manager permanently but the club are languishing in the lower reaches of League One.

With a lowly league position allied to a cup exit, Merson admits he may not have much longer at the helm.

"You've got to be honest and say that after a result like that I might not be here next week," conceded Merson.

"That's football and you can't hide from it. I'm devastated by the result."
