Souness raves about Boumsong

Graeme Souness has reiterated his interest in Rangers' Jean-Alain Boumsong.

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has reiterated his interest in Rangers defender Jean-Alain Boumsong.

The Magpies have been short of cover in central defence since selling Jonathan Woodgate to Real Madrid at the start of the season in a £13.4 million deal.

Souness has made no secret of the fact he will try to bring in a centre half during the January transfer window, and confirmed the France international is high on his wish-list.

He revealed he had watched Boumsong in action when Les Bleus took on Poland last week, and had been impressed with what he had seen.

"I watched him play for France against Poland in Paris last week and he's a very good player," he stated.

"He's with a very good club, a very big club at the moment in Glasgow Rangers."

"We're looking for defenders to strengthen our squad because we believe we're short in quality there.

"He's one player we've been looking at. He is a quality central defender."

Boumsong, 24, joined Rangers in the summer on a free transfer after seeing out his contract with Auxerre.

He has impressed during his time at Ibrox and has already been valued in the £8 million category.
