Bridges reveals relief

Michael Bridges has spoken of his relief after netting his first goal since May 2000.

Michael Bridges has spoken of his relief after netting his first goal since May 2000 in Sunderland's 1-0 win over Stoke.

The former Leeds hit-man stepped off the bench to put The Black Cats just two points off the Championship summit following his winner.

Bridges has endured four nightmare years with a catalogue of injuries but is now looking to a healthier future in the North East.

''It has been a long drought,'' conceded Bridges. ''I have had a lot of injuries in that time, but this has given me a massive confidence boost.

''The Stoke fans were taking the mickey out of me when I was warming up, asking how long it was since I'd scored, so it was nice to get off the bench and score.

''I don't care whether it went in off my backside or my nose, I'm just relieved to have scored.

''The goal meant we got three points from a tough game and that has given the promotion push another boost.''
