Hertha Berlin expressed their delight at Germany international defender Arne Friedrich signing a new deal at the Olympiastadion. The highly-rated stopper was interesting big-spending Schalke and double winners Werder Bremen, but has signed a contract with Hertha that keeps him with the club until 2007.
"I am happy from the bottom of my heart that Arne opted to stay with us despite the other offers he had," declared managing director Dieter Hoeness.
"We'd like to build a new team around him and we aim to play in Europe on a regular basis."
Friedrich's new contract contains several options which tie him to Hertha for one or two more years should they manage to qualify for the Uefa Cup or the UEFA Champions League in the coming seasons.
