Karpin makes wages vow
Valery Karpin will not claim his wages if his one-match suspension is upheld.
Valery Karpin has revealed that if his one-match ban is upheld and he is forced to miss Real Sociedad's game against Real Betis this Saturday, then he will not claim his wages.The 35-year-old midfielder has been at the centre of controversy after being sent off last weekend in the 2-2 draw at Deportivo after clapping the home fans.
Throughout the game, the supporters in the Riazor chanted 'Karpin, die' and he responded by ironically applauding them as he was being substituted, but before he reached the touchline referee Antonio Rubinos Perez produced his second yellow card.
"The insults that I received from the crowd are not important," Karpin explained.
"What worries me more is the attitude of the referees.
"Thankfully, or maybe unfortunately, I have become accustomed to his now.
"I hope to play this Saturday, but if the appeal is turned down and I am not allowed to play against Betis then I will not take my salary because I do not want to harm the club.
"I am confident that people will see the truth, the reason and the logic and annul the card, but what can I do? I cannot make other people's decisions for them."
Immediatly after the game against Depor, Karpin sparked a storm when he said: "I discovered that a referee can play a part in violence in football.
"In Deportivo's stadium they sang 'Karpin go and die' at me throughout the game.
"When the referee sent me off, it was as if he was giving them permission to say 'Karpin go and die'. What a great example to inspire the hooligans."
The matchday official defended his position stating that he showed the Estonian-born player his second yellow card for "applauding repeatedly, in a clearly sarcastic manner."
