Parry vows to keep Gerrard
Rick Parry has vowed to do everything in his power to keep Steven Gerrard at Anfield.
Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has vowed to do everything in his power to keep midfield talisman Steven Gerrard at Anfield.England international Gerrard thrust himself into the spotlight on Wednesday evening when inspiring Liverpool to an amazing UEFA Champions League victory over Olympiakos.
The Reds were staring elimination in the face when Gerrard grasped the mantle by firing in an unstoppable 25-yard drive which booked Liverpool's place in the knockout stages.
The goal not only prompted wild scenes on Merseyside, it also led to suggestions that Chelsea could rekindle their interest in the 24-year-old.
Gerrard said on the eve of the clash with Olympiakos that he needed to secure regular silverware and it has been suggested that Chelsea could come calling in the summer if Liverpool fall short this season.
Parry is aware the vultures may be circling, but he has insisted the midfielder will not be sold and is convinced Rafa Benitez can bring honours to Merseyside.
"We have no intention of letting him go, ever," Parry told the Daily Mail. "And I mean ever.
"We have no intention of selling him under any circumstances."
Parry has already spoken to Gerrard about his pre-game statements and believes the club and player are pulling in the same direction.
"What Stevie said the other day merely reflects the same sentiments that both he and I expressed after all the speculation about Chelsea last summer," added Parry.
"His ambition and hunger for success is exactly the same as mine and Rafa's.
"I have spoken to Stevie about the way things are developing and I understand and totally respect what he wants from his career.
"He wants to win the game's top honours and if we can deliver that, I am convinced he will remain a Liverpool player.
"The manager has a record that no one in Europe can better over the past three years. What did he come to Anfield for? It wasn't with the aim of finishing fourth."
