The player leading the way in our inaugral skysports.com Player of the Year award is Chelsea skipper John Terry.

The England international has an average mark of 7.7 which betters the next-best performers - Stamford Bridge team-mate Frank Lampard and Everton midfielder Thomas Gravesen.

Premiership leaders Chelsea are well represented in the team with three players involved and Middlesbrough's form is rewarded by Gareth Southgate, Stewart Downing and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's presence.

There are surprises in attack with Hasselbaink and Milan Baros just shading out Thierry Henry, Jermain Defoe and Paul Dickov, who are just behind them in terms of average rating.

Mentions also need to go to Darren Huckerby and Andy Johnson who have done well to record an average mark of seven points.

Craig Bellamy is unlucky not to figure in the team and others who have a rating of seven or more are George Boateng, Cristiano Ronaldo, Patrick Vieira, Jay-Jay Okocha, Muzzy Izzet and Damien Duff.

Sol Campbell and Jamie Carragher were on the fringes of the fight for defensive slots as was Ricardo Carvalho, who was eged out by Southgate after a glitch in our data was resolved.

The race to be top keeper was suitably intense.

Antti Niemi edges past Mark Crossley by virtue of playing more games with Paul Robinson and Shaka Hislop also performing well.

Interestingly, there are no Arsenal or Manchester United players in our top XI.
