Gills grab vital win

Gillingham picked up a vital 1-0 victory over Plymouth.

Gillingham picked up vital points in their battle against relegation with a 1-0 victory over Plymouth.

Andrew Crofts celebrated signing a new long-term deal at the club with his second goal of the season to wrap up a victory for Stan Ternent's side, with Plymouth's bad day compounded by the late dismissal of Paul Connolly.

Plymouth had started brightly, with Steve Banks doing superbly to deny Scott Taylor.

After weathering the storm The Gills finally exerted some pressure of their own, and Darius Henderson and Alan Pouton went close.

Paul Wotton drew a smart save from Banks and Taylor volleyed straight at the keeper when well placed.

The hosts then got the vital breakthrough, when Crofts thumped a diving header into the back of the net from Nicky Southall's pinpoint cross.

Connolly was then sent off in the closing stages to make it a truly bad day for Argyle.
