Maldini: Chelsea came calling
Paolo Maldini has revealed that he had an offer to join Chelsea from Gianluca Vialli.
Milan colossus Paolo Maldini has revealed that he had an offer to join Chelsea when his compatriot Gianluca Vialli was at the helm at Stamford Bridge. In an exclusive interview with skysports.com, the legendary stopper described how he seriously considered joining the London side, as at that time Milan were going through a difficult time and Maldini had problems with the Rossoneri fans.
However, the 36-year-old decided to stay with the club where he started his career, and has now gone on to become the record appearance holder and all-time hero with the Serie A side.
"I bet he will not confirm this but Gianluca was the only one who approached me during my 20-year-career with Milan and offered me the chance to move," said Maldini.
"I considered his offer, because I was hurt by some things that had been said about me, but then I preferred to remain with the club of my heart.
"That was the first and last time I thought about leaving."
Italy's most capped international, with 126 appearances, also said that he holds English referees in high esteem, whilst commenting on Gianfranco Zola's criticisms of Italian official Salvatore Racalbuto.
"Gianfranco said Racalbuto was a bit too nervous during the match between Cagliari and Juventus. I can't comment on that, because I was not on the pitch, but speaking in general terms I think he is right.
"Maybe he is accustomed to the Premiership style, with referees who are very good at handling difficult situations, when players seem to lose their nerves.
"I have known many English referees during my career and I think they are more calm than the Italian ones, who sometimes get overwhelmed by tension."
