Per confirms retirement plan

Per Frandsen has confirmed his intention to retire at the end of the season.

Wigan Athletic's experienced midfielder Per Frandsen has confirmed his intention to retire at the end of the season.

A serious knee ligament injury sustained against Sheffield United has kept the 34-year-old on the sidelines for much of the season.

Frandsen, formerly of Blackburn and Bolton, is nearing a return to first-team action, but does not see himself playing on after the summer.

"It's definitely my last season. I'm definitely going to retire after this season. I'm not going to change my mind," he told Sky Sports News.

"It would be nice not to finish my career on a stretcher so hopefully I will come on or something and play a game.

"I thought I had a good year in me, but unfortunately this happened and now I'm definitely going to stop next year."

Frandsen has stated the way he sustained the injury was fairly innocuous, as he was simply looking to clear the ball up field.

"It was a freak accident," he added.

"I was going to volley the ball up field and didn't see one of the Sheffield United players and I think I hit his elbow with my knee.

"My knee just went around and it was just one of those freak accidents."
