Jemal happy to leave United

Jemal Johnson hopes leaving Manchester United was beneficial to his career.

Jemal Johnson is determined to prove that leaving Manchester United was beneficial to his career.

The Blackburn Rovers striker has had an instant impact on Mark Hughes's side by scoring his first senior goal in the club's 3-0 FA Cup win over League One side Colchester United on Saturday.

The 19-year-old American's rise through the ranks at Ewood Park comes after he left United as a 16-year-old, having spent five years on their books as a youth trainee.

Johnson, who nearly went on loan to League Two side Darlington back in September, thinks leaving The Red Devils may have been an important step in his career.

"It was disappointing to leave Old Trafford, but you only have to look at Robbie Savage," Johnson said.

"He also left United when he was young, but he's a massive player now, so he is the perfect example for me."

The teenager's progress is sure to alert United States manager Bruce Arena in the near future, having yet to receive a call-up at any level from his birth nation.
