Korell forced to retire

Borussia Monchengladbach defender Steffen Korell has announced his retirement.

Borussia Monchengladbach defender Steffen Korell has announced his retirement after losing a two-year battle against injury.

The 33-year-old's career came to a jolting halt after suffering a serious knee injury during training in March 2003.

He has made two short appearances for the Foals this season, but has now been forced to admit that his career is over.

"I tried my best to work my way back into the first team, but my knee is still causing so many problems that there is no point in carrying on," Korell said.

He joined Gladbach from Freiburg in 2000, making a total of 51 Bundesliga appearances for the five-time German champions.

The news is a blow to Monchengladbach boss Dick Advocaat as he tries to steer the club to safety in Die Bundesliga.
