Cole inquiry launched
The Premier League will inquire if Chelsea illegally approached Ashley Cole.
The Premier League have launched an inquiry into allegations that Chelsea made an illegal approach for Arsenal left back Ashley Cole. The news comes after newspaper reports had suggested that Cole and his representative Jonathan Barnett met with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon, manager Jose Mourinho and agent Pini Zahavi at a London hotel to discuss a potential move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have not confirmed or denied that the alleged meeting took place, with Gunners vice-chairman David Dein already stating there was compelling evidence a meeting took place.
Having received further information from the News of the World newspaper and the support of Arsenal, Premier League officials are now set to carry out a thorough investigation into the allegations.
"The board of the FA Premier League convened today [Sunday] and have decided to launch a formal inquiry into allegations that Chelsea FC may have acted in a way so as to breach Premier League rule K3 regarding approaches to players already contracted to another club," a Premier League statement read.
"The board is finally able to establish a clear position from Arsenal FC and are grateful for chairman Peter Hill-Wood's confirmation that his club want the Premier League to investigate the matter and that they will co-operate fully with any inquiry."
Premier League rules state that clubs are not allowed to 'tap up' players under contract at other clubs, with Aston Villa found guilty and reprimanded for a similar charge over trying to lure then Southampton striker James Beattie to Villa Park earlier in the season.
Chelsea have since stated that they will co-operate with the Premier League's investigation.
"Chelsea can confirm it has been in discussions with the Premier League over the last few days and we will be co-operating fully with the inquiry announced today," the Chelsea statement read.
"It would be inappropriate to make any further comment until the inquiry is completed."
