Marseille goalkeeper Fabien Barthez has been punished by the club for spitting.
Marseille goalkeeper Fabien Barthez has been punished for spitting at a referee.The former Manchester United star spat at Moroccan referee Abdellah El Achiri following a friendly with Wydad Casablanca in Morocco.
Marseille have now acted and punished the French international who has apologised to the officials and also the Moroccan Referees Commissions.
"We have not refused to take up our responsibilities," Marseille general manager Pape Diouf told the club's official website.
"If Fabien's gesture was what it was we can nonetheless understand the atmosphere made him lose control.
"But that gesture, the spit, is totally inexcusable and we condemn it.
"He has been the subject of internal disciplinary action which I will not reveal.
"We have reported the punishment to our Moroccan friends."
