Vieira fury at Munich massacre

Patrick Vieira has spoken of his anger following Arsenal's defeat to Bayern Munich.

Patrick Vieira has spoken of his disappointment following Tuesday's 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich.

Arsenal's chances of progression in the UEFA Champions League look bleak following a miserable night in Germany, but Vieira believes they were beaten as much by themselves as Bayern.

The North London outfit defended in a shambolic fashion for much of the game, but Vieira credits this primarily due to the absence of Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole.

''I must say, from our viewpoint, we conceded three stupid goals,'' Vieira told Kicker.

''Clearly [the defence missed Campbell]. He is a very important, quality player for us.

''You cannot replace him so simply. But we must not push the guilt on to the defence - everyone lost jointly.

''Ashley Cole could only be used for a short time after his injury and naturally, we also missed Dennis Bergkamp in attack.

''I am totally frustrated. This game was pure frustration for me and my colleagues.

''Bayern were not simply better in this game. It reminded me a lot of last season when we were eliminated against Chelsea.

"We were all so disappointed, as we did not see ourselves as being worse.''

A difficult second leg awaits at Highbury, with Vieira insistent that the whole of Arsenal's side need to defend with greater strength and resilience.

''The return is very important for us,'' he continued.

''But, we must be defensively much better altogether than we were in Munich - if we want to progress.

''And we must learn that a team doesn't have have to play prettily to win games.''
