Makaay misses Arsenal clash

Roy Makaay will miss next week's UEFA Champions League clash at Arsenal.

Bayern Munich will be without star striker Roy Makaay for next week's UEFA Champions League clash at Arsenal as the Dutchman pulled a thigh muscle in Bayern's fortunate 1-0 home win over Bundesliga champions Werder Bremen.

The 30-year-old striker appeared to be clean through late in the match as Bayern defended deep to hold onto Michael Ballack's early lead, but then interrupted his run and had to be carried off the pitch with his face in pain.

Bayern boss Felix Magath has confirmed Makaay will miss the trip to Highbury.

‚Ç£He has pulled a thigh muscle and will miss the trip to London,‚Ç¥ confirmed Magath.

Bremen dominated large shares of possession against a tough-defending Bayern team, who kept a clean sheet for the 11th Bundesliga game this season, but hardly challenged keeper Oliver Kahn.

‚Ç£We had to work hard for our win and unfortunately we never really got going up front,‚Ç¥ added Magath,

Magath heaped praise on Ballack, who impressed with a powerful header on his first start after being sidelined for almost three weeks with muscular problems.

‚Ç£In the air Michael is one of the most dangerous players in the world," said Magath. "He is the type of player who can make the difference in important games and we are very happy to have in our team."
