Dutch delight in Monaco

PSV produced a thoroughly professional performance to see off Monaco.

PSV Eindhoven produced a thoroughly professional performance to see off Monaco and reach the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League.

The Eredivisie leaders came into the tie with a 1-0 advantage and they protected the lead with their lives and hit Monaco with a sucker punch when Jan vennegoor of Hesselink headed home on 27 minutes.

The goal left Monaco needing three goals to progress and it knocked the stuffing out of them, as PSV weathered a storm before adding a second through DaMarcus Beasley 20 minutes from time to secure their first win on French soil.

Monaco started the game at a rate of knots and Javier Chevanton demonstrated exactly why Didier Deschamps had been so desperate for him to prove his fitness as he was the orchestrator of all their positive early play.

After Mohamed Kallon had tested the handling of Gomes in the PSV goal, Uruguayan forward Chevanton played in Lucas Bernardi but he failed to test the Brazilian shot stopper.

PSV were content to sit back and they were almost made to pay when Jaroslav Plasil produced a sublime clipped pass for Kallon, but Gomes stood tall to make the save.

Kallon wasted a fine chance moments later, again after good play from Chevanton, while Plasil shot weakly after being played in by the bewitching combination of Javier Saviola and Chevanton.

Patrice Evra was always keen to stretch his legs down the left and he was felled on the edge of the box by Alex, but Chevanton's wicked free kick just eluded Saviola at the far post.

PSV were fleeting visitors into the Monaco half, but they made a rare foray count on 27 minutes when vennegoor of Hesselink opened the scoring.

The angular forward ran unchecked into the six-yard box and met a corner from Mark van Bommel with precision to power his header past Flavio Roma.

Vennegoor of Hesselink's run was perfect, but the delivery from van Bommel was equally good and it showed his attacking instincts are as well honed as his defensive qualities.

The goal knocked the stuffing out of Monaco and their play lacked penetration and it was PSV who created a good chance moments before the break, but Roma raced off his line to smother a shot from the industrious South Korean Park Ji-sung.

It took Monaco almost 20 minutes to fashion a chance in the second half, but Chevanton saw his right-foot drive superbly saved by Gomes and Saviola stabbed the rebound over the bar.

The revival was short lived, however, as PSV grabbed a second 20 minutes from time, with substitute Beasley arriving right on cue at the far past to stab home a cross from Philip Cocu.

Monaco lost their desire and composure after the second goal and Gael Givet was handed a straight red card by referee Steve Bennett for a reckless lunge on Jefferson Farfan.

Chevanton deserved something from the night, but he was frustrated once again late in the day as Gomes produced an acrobatic save to keep his clean sheet.
