Makelele: We're naive

Claude Makelele believes Chelsea can ill-afford another showing of naivety.

Claude Makelele believes Chelsea can ill-afford another showing of naivety if they want to triumph in the UEFA Champions League.

The Blues squeezed into the quarter finals of the competition on Tuesday evening after a thrilling 5-4 aggregate victory over Barcelona.

A mesmerising 4-2 success at Stamford Bridge saw Chelsea through but Makelele admits the team's inexperience almost cost the club dearly.

Chelsea romped into a 3-0 lead before allowing Barca to score twice which, if the match had finished that way, would have seen the Spaniards progress on away goals.

John Terry's second half header kept The Blues on course for a Treble, with the Carling Cup already secured and The Premiership close to being sewn up.

But French midfielder Makelele concedes Chelsea will have to learn from the mistakes in midweek if they want to provide Jose Mourinho with back-to-back Champions League titles.

"Everything wasn't perfect," commented Makelele. "At 3-0 we lacked experience.

"We are still naive and should have done better, not given them the opportunity to come back.

"We played with fire.

"We must learn from that if we want to go all the way this season."
