Shrimpers loan Irons star

Southend have moved to snap up Darren Blewitt on loan from West Ham.

The promising Irons defender is on the fringe of the first team squad and has been given the chance to gain first-team experience.

The 19-year-old came through West Ham's Academy and has captained the reserve team.

Blewitt has yet to make a first team appearance but has been on the bench - including in the 2-0 victory over Southend in the Carling Cup this season.

Southend are battling for an automatic promotion spot in League 2 and manager Steve Tilson (pictured) will be delighted if the youngster can prove his worth in the coming months.
