Juninho nears Lyon deal

Juninho could celebrate a landmark by signing a new contract with Lyon.

Juninho Pernambucano could celebrate a landmark achievement by signing a new contract with Lyon.

The Brazilian playmaker added the March Player of the Month prize to his February award and in so doing became the first footballer to claim the French accolade in consecutive months.

He beat Marseille striker Steve Marlet and Rennes forward Olivier Monterrubio to the honour after polling over half the votes.

The 30-year-old could now follow up his dual award by finally penning a contract extension at Stade Gerland.

His present deal expires in 2006 and Juninho has repeatedly stated that he wants his future resolved before the start of next season.

Talks have taken place regarding a fresh deal and it appears both parties are steadily edging towards an agreement.

Indeed, reports have suggested that Juninho, who joined Lyon in 2001, could stay with the French champions for the remainder of his career.
