Rio cools Chelsea talk
Rio Ferdinand insists there was nothing untoward about his Peter Kenyon meeting.
Rio Ferdinand insists there was nothing untoward about his meeting with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon in a London restaurant. The England international bumped into the former Manchester United supremo on Saturday night, fuelling rumours of a summer move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have already issued a statement to deny it was a pre-planned rendezvous and insist it was 'purely by chance' that Kenyon and Ferdinand met.
Ferdinand also scotched any fanciful talk that he was discussing an end-of-season move to Chelsea, affirming he was at the restaurant to meet his agent Pini Zahavi.
"I went to meet my agent and Mr Kenyon was there," Ferdinand told The Sun. "I had no idea he'd be there.
"People can believe it or not but it's the truth.
"It was in a public place and other people were there. We said a brief hello and did not discuss football.
"I've got no intention of leaving United and that's that."
Kenyon was involved in the deal which took Ferdinand to Old Trafford from Leeds United in 2002 for a club record fee.
But Ferdinand admitted earlier this week that, rather than seek to join champions-elect Chelsea, he wants to extend his spell with United.
The centre half has two years remaining on his present contract and revealed he and his agent have been in talks regarding fresh terms at Old Trafford.
