Paulo lands British passport
Malaga striker Paulo Wanchope has officially been granted British citizenship.
Malaga striker Paulo Wanchope has officially been granted British citizenship which could prolong his career in Spain. The Costa Rican international now has dual nationality and no longer occupies the place of a non-EU player in Malaga's squad.
It means that the Primera outfit will be able to bring in another 'foreign' player in the summer without moving Wanchope on.
The former Manchester City striker only moved to Spain last summer but, after an encouraging start, has fallen out of favour under new boss Antonio Tapia.
He is behind recent signing Fernando Baiano in the pecking order and has not even been selected for Malaga's last two match-day squads.
Although obtaining EU nationality will boost Wanchope's chances of staying at La Rosaleda - where he is under contract until June 2006 - the 28-year-old could still seek pastures new in the summer if his chances of first-team action remain limited.
A return to English football has been mooted in recent weeks with Sheffield United reported to be monitoring his situation.
