Boyd hat-trick sinks Owls

Adam Boyd's hat-trick gave Hartlepool United a 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

A hat-trick from Adam Boyd gave Hartlepool United an important 3-0 win over fellow play-off contenders Sheffield Wednesday.

It was a vital three points for Neale Cooper's side, who were in the final play-off position before they faced The Owls at a wet and windy Victoria Park on Friday evening.

The North East club got off to the best possible start, as Boyd scored the first of his three goals after just two minutes.

He then doubled the home side's lead on 18 minutes, as Pools took a two-goal into the half time break.

Any hopes of a Wednesday recovery were dashed just before the hour mark, as Boyd claimed his hat-trick with a sublime strike off the outside of his right foot.

The result takes Hartlepool to fourth in the table while defeat for Paul Sturrock's side makes it six league matches without a win.

It leaves the South Yorkshire club just two points ahead of seventh place Bournemouth, who play on Saturday.
