Burnige in Lions wages warning

Jeff Burnige has indicated Millwall may have to cut their wage bill.

Millwall chairman-elect Jeff Burnige has indicated that the club may have to cut their wage bill.

Burnige is set to take charge at the New Den at the end of the season with Theo Paphitis stepping down.

Burnige believes the club have struggled with their wages this season and feels things may have to be changed.

"We have taken a big gamble on wages this season, and it hasn't quite come off," Burnige told the club's official website.

"The last two promotions - in 1998 and 2001 - were achieved by teams we had groomed ourselves, and we need to revert to what we do best and what has succeeded in the past."

Meanwhile, Lions youngster Joe Healy faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury.

Healy picked up a dislocated knee while playing for the club's Under-18s side and he is expected to be out of action for up to nine months.
