Injury horror for Maxwell

Ajax full back Maxwell will be sidelined for eight months with a knee injury.

Ajax full back Maxwell will be sidelined for eight months, throwing the Brazilian's future up in the air.

Maxwell damaged his cruciate ligament during Ajax's surprise Amstel Cup defeat to Willem II Tilburg on Thursday evening.

The 23-year-old had jumped out of the way of a challenge from Willem II's Nuelson Wau but damaged his knee after landing awkwardly.

An MRI scan has confirmed the extent of the injury and Maxwell is likely to require eight months of inactivity.

His injury is also expected to scupper any hopes the South American had of leaving the Amsterdam ArenA during the summer.

Maxwell is refusing to extend his contract, which expires in 2006, and Ajax were tipped to reap a fee for the exciting wing back at the end of the season.

Chelsea, Internazionale, Juventus and Roma have all been mooted as admirers of Maxwell but they may now hold fire on any bid following the serious injury.
