Leverkusen may lose Ponte

Robson Ponte may have played his last game for Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Robson Ponte may have played his last game for the Bundesliga side.

Ponte - who is out of contract in the summer - has been plagued by knee problems ever since the 1-0 home defeat against Borussia Dortmund and has now returned to Brazil for an operation.

It remains doubtful if the 29-year-old will return to Germany again as contract talks have proved fruitless in the past weeks.

The former Guarani player struggled to make an impression when he joined Bayer in 1999, but following a two-year loan spell at Wolfsburg the midfielder turned into a first-team regular.

Leverkusen coach Klaus Augenthaler has stressed his desire to keep Ponte but with South American giants Corinthians interested, the Brazilian might seek a move back home.
