Xavi set for new deal

Barcelona will offer Xavi a new deal to fend off any interest from Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho has reportedly targeted the Spanish international midfielder, ahead of Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, as one of his summer transfers.

Barca president Joan Laporta has heard about interest from Stamford Bridge, but is keen to keep the 25-year-old at Camp Nou.

Laporta says that Xavi has been a key part of their success under Frank Rijkaard this season, and is keen to offer him a new deal.

"For me, he (Xavi) has been one of the keys to our success this season and we hope that he will continue to be so for many years to come," said Laporta, answering questions at Barcelona University.

"We will make him an offer that will improve his present deal and I'm confident he will accept.

"It's true there has been some interest from Chelsea, at least that's what his representative has led us to believe, but I think that Xavi is very happy here and will accept our offer."

Xavi's current deal at his only professional club expires in 2007 and the Spanish league leaders are looking to get him to sign a longer deal.

Laporta was asked which player he would most like to sign for Barcelona, and he pointed to Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.

"The truth is I would love to see Thierry Henry here, but he would have to come now given his age."
