Injury scuppers Gonzalez move

Mark Gonzalez's serious injury has seen reported interest in him from Liverpool cool.

Albacete have revealed that a number of Premiership clubs have been trailing Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez, who suffered a serious knee ligament injury last weekend.

The South American's form has been one of the bright spots of an otherwise disappointing campaign for Alba who find themselves on the verge of relegation to La Segunda.

Gonzalez, who was actually born in South Africa, moved to the Estadio Carlos Belmonte last summer from Universidad Catolica.

With the team expected to drop out of the Spanish top-flight, the pacy Chile international had been tipped to move on with a host of clubs including Rafa Benitez's Liverpool showing an interest.

However, the 20-year-old tore the cruciate ligament in his left knee during last weekend's 3-1 win over Levante and thus all talk of a possible summer move has now been put on the back-burner.

"There were many Spanish Primera teams interested in him and also foreign ones, some from England, but I think that interest is going to have cooled now," stated Albacete director of sport Antonio Lopez Alfaro.

"Before they were all fighting for the player, but the impression I get now is that the player will probably be with us next season.

"Unfortunately he sustained an injury after scoring his goal that is very serious, and that has had repercussions on the transfer of the player."
