Barca join Proto chase
Silvio Proto has rejected Chelsea amid rumoured interest from Barcelona.
La Louviere goalkeeper Silvio Proto is understood to have rejected an offer from Chelsea amid reports a move to Barcelona is close. The 21-year-old shot-stopper is regarded as one of the best young keepers in Europe and has attracted the interest of a host of clubs including Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich, as well as clubs inside Belgium.
Chelsea were believed to have joined the race with current number two Carlo Cudicini tipped to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer.
However, Proto has reportedly rejected a move to West London with Catalan giants Bacelona now deemed to be pole position for his signature.
Barca are on the verge of their first Spanish title in six years, but will look to add one or two fresh faces to their squad in the summer with a goalkeeper to rival current number one Victor Valdes rumoured to be on their wish-list.
Proto confirmed he had been contacted by the Spanish outfit, but insisted a deal was still some way off.
"There are contacts (with Barcelona), but I can't say any more although nothing is signed," the player told La Derniere Heure-Les Sports.
Barca are sure to face a fight if they are to eventually land the custodian, who has three Belgium caps to his name.
La Louviere are looking for a figure of around é¼650,000 for the player which would be easily accessible for most of his suitors.
