Boro agree Yak terms
Yakubu Aiyegbeni's move to Middlesbrough has edged closer to completion.
Yakubu Aiyegbeni's move to Middlesbrough from Portsmouth has edged closer to completion after he agreed personal terms.
The Nigerian international travelled to Teesside on Monday to discuss terms and undergo a medical.
Boro have now struck a deal with Aiyegbeni who will complete his move to The Riverside when the transfer window opens next month.
The deal is worth over £7 million to Pompey, although a sizeable chunk of that is due to his former club Maccabi Haifa.
Boro have moved quickly to seal Aiyegbeni's signature in order to fend off interest from a number of other Premiership clubs including local rivals Newcastle.
"We've agreed a fee with Portsmouth and agreed personal terms with the player," Boro chief executive Keith Lamb told Sky Sports News.
"He's currently having a medical, we don't anticipate any problmes and expect him to be a Middlesbrough player in the very near future.
"He fills Steve McClaren's requirements as he's young, a goalscorer, and the next generation. We've got Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Mark Viduka and I'm sure Yakubu joining our strikeforce it will give us even more strike power.
"Who knows? [If any strikers will be leaving] but we're interested in adding to the squad and improving the squad at the moment."
The speed of the move allows manager Steve McClaren to tie up other transfer targets, one of which could be Austrian Rene Aufhauser.
Boro are expected to dispatch a delegation along with Everton and Fulham to watch the Grazer midfielder in action against Rapid Vienna on Tuesday.
Fulham have already offered £2 million for Aufhauser, but both Boro and Everton could launch rival bids if Aufhauser impresses this week.
