Finland's Antti Niemi has announced his retirement from international football.

The Southampton star, who is expected to leave the club this summer after relegation from the top flight, has decided to concentrate on his playing career.

Niemi insists that he is leaving the national side in a fine state, pointing to compatriot Jussi Jaaskelainen's superb season at Bolton.

"There have been many things nagging me and I want to be in playing shape next year," said Niemi.

"There's nothing dramatic in this decision.

"At the end of the season, Jussi Jaaskelainen was one of the Premier League's best goalkeepers, so I will not be leaving anyone in a tough spot."

Niemi turns 33 at the end of this month, but could well be handed a stint at a high-profile club with links to the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.
