Jewell: Carroll no-go

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell says Roy Carroll is not one of his targets.

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell has rubbished speculation linking Roy Carroll with a return to the club.

The Northern Ireland international left Wigan for Manchester United four years ago but is a free agent again after being released by The Red Devils.

Jewell is looking for a new goalkeeper following Athletic's elevation to The Premiership but Carroll will be out of his price range.

In any case, John Filan has been given a vote of confidence by the Wigan boss as he will remain first choice next term.

"There's no truth whatsoever in those stories," he told PA Sport.

"Roy Carroll is a very good keeper but, if he turned down £20,000 a week at Manchester United, it's hardly likely that he will be coming here.

"But I am looking to bring in another keeper.

"John Filan will be our number one but we need to strengthen in that area."

Carroll has a number of options as he ponders his next move after playing his last game for United in the FA Cup final.
