Valencia capture Kluivert

Valencia have snapped up former Newcastle striker Patrick Kluivert.

Valencia have snapped up former Newcastle striker Patrick Kluivert on a free transfer.

Kluivert left Newcastle at the end of the season after one year on Tyneside.

The former Barcelona star was expected to make a return to the Spanish league and Valencia have won the race for his signature.

Spanish Segunda outfit Alaves were also thought to be keen on Kluivert, but Valencia have lured him to La Mestalla.

Kluivert has agreed a three-year deal with the option of another year with Valencia.

The move is subject to a medical next week and if he passes that he will become new Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores's first signing since taking charge.

"Valencia have reached a preliminary agreement with Dutch player Patrick Kluivert for the next three seasons with an option for an additional year," read a club statement.

"The footballer who will arrive on a free transfer has agreed to the deal but this will only be effective if the player passes his medical that will be administered on June 9."
