Juninho is likely to stay at Lyon next season as he feels it will be the best preparation for the World Cup.The Brazilian playmaker is hoping to secure a spot in the holders' squad for next summer's tournament in Germany.
But he faces an uncertain club future as his contract with the French champions also expires next year.
He has been in talks regarding an extension at Stade Gerland but he has also been linked to the likes of Manchester United, Lazio and Valencia.
While the 30-year-old would be tempted by joining a major European club he does not want to be unsettled prior to the World Cup in 2006.
"For the moment we are waiting to find an agreement to prolong," said Juninho's agent Jose Fuentes.
"After four years at Lyon he would like to go on marking the club's history. Moreover, Lyon is the best place to prepare for the World Cup."
New Lyon coach Gerard Houllier is also trying to keep hold of Michael Essien, Eric Abidal and Mahamadou Diarra, who could all sign contract extensions.
Houllier is also looking at reinforcements and his pursuit of Liverpool striker Milan Baros could see him offer Sidney Govou in exchange.
L'OL have also been linked with Real Madrid's unsettled winger Luis Figo and Bordeaux ace Marouane Chamakh, who has been described as 'non-transferable' by his club.
Meanwhile, Houllier has made an appointment to his backroom staff by confirming Patrice Bergues as his assistant.
