Smicer explains move

Vladimir Smicer has revealed his reasons for heading for Bordeaux.

Vladimir Smicer has again stressed he had contact with Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City before signing for Bordeaux.

The Czech Republic international has agreed a two-year contract with Les Girondins after calling time on his Liverpool career.

Smicer ended his stint at Anfield on a high note as his goal helped the Merseysiders claw their way back into the UEFA Champions League final with Milan and he also successfully converted his penalty in the shoot-out.

Lens and Espanyol also targeted the 32-year-old, who continues to insist the interest from Charlton was genuine, despite denials from the Londoners.

"I had contact with Charlton and Birmingham City but Bordeaux really wanted me," said the former Lens man.

"A season ago, the club already contacted me but I had a knee injury.

"This season, they came back before the Champions League semi-finals.

"It is important to feel such things even when you are 32 years old.

"Bordeaux had trouble but Bordeaux are a great club, with a beautiful history.

"It is a club with huge potential with young players of great quality.

"Lens asked for information but it was never really concrete. I also had contact with Espanyol from Barcelona but I preferred Bordeaux.

"I speak French and I thought it would be easier for me to adapt, and for my wife too, who also speaks French."

Smicer parted Liverpool on good terms and wishes Rafa Benitez the best of luck on Merseyside.

"I was a little disappointed not to play a lot at Liverpool," he admitted.

"But Rafael Benitez knew I would reach the end of my contract and he has other plans.

"About the Champions League final, he knew I was at my best.

"He was fair and I am leaving Liverpool and the fans in the best way."
