Borgetti hero for Mexico

Mexico deservedly stole all three points from Brazil in the Confederations Cup.

Mexico chalked up their second Confederations Cup win with an impressive 1-0 defeat of world champions Brazil.

Jared Borgetti - despite missing a first half penalty - proved Mexico's hero as his header just shy of the hour mark gave his side three points and control of the group ahead of their South American counterparts.

The first period saw Brazil dominate possession but whilst duel playmakers Kaka and Ronaldinho showed occasional glimpses of quality, neither had the sparkle that saw them overwhelm Greece in their first group match.

Exciting starlet Robinho worked space well on ten minutes but his effort was blocked before strike partner Adriano was denied by an alert Oswaldo Sanchez in Mexico's goal.

A sumptuous Brazil move ended with Adriano again thwarted by Sanchez on the stretch, while Robinho's dancing feet made an opening but his shot was unable to match the approach play and the ball was dragged wide.

On a rare foray for Mexico, Dida comfortably parried from Ramon Morales' snap-shot before Roque Junior was adjudged to have felled Borgetti six yards from goal.

Borgetti stepped up to the penalty spot and duly dispatched with aplomb - only for the referee to order a retake for encroachment. His next effort struck the bar but Dida was adjudged to have moved off his line.

Borgetti's third, and final effort, proved to be little better as Dida managed to parry at mid-height at his right hand post.

Dida produced an excellent stop from the resulting corner before Adriano missed Brazil's best chance when after being fed by an exquisite Ronaldinho through-ball his strike was true but Sanchez's fingertip was equal to it.

On the stroke of half time the Internazionale striker showed his more fallible side, his right, when free six yards from goal he screwed the ball over.

The first chance of the second half fell to Robinho but he lobbed over after an excellent first touch, before on 58 minutes Borgetti broke the deadlock.

A Mexico corner saw Roque Junior misjudge the flight of the ball and Borgetti was left to head past a stranded Dida from close range.

With Brazil limbs looking lethargic and Mexico buoyed in spirit, the world champions looked unlikely to find a leveller as a lack of width allowed their South American neighbours to defend comfortably.

On a rare cross into the box Adriano bulleted a header past Sanchez from Kaka's delivery but saw his effort rightly chalked off for offside.

Brazil posed rare moments of anxiety for a hardworking Mexican back-line but in truth, those in green looked just as likely to double their advantage as those in yellow were to grab a leveller.
